We are seeking an inpatient Substance Abuse Counselor to:

  • Deliver clinical diagnostic services in the area of alcohol and other drug abuse to adult patients and their families across the spectrum of UW Health settings
  • Practice patient/family assessment and management, resource management, care facilitation, and discharge planning with referrals to outside facilities
  • Collaborate with medical staff and all care giving disciplines

Education:
Minimum - Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Marriage and Family Counseling, or other Behavioral Health related field.

Preferred - Relevant student internship or other educational experience in a health care setting.

Work Experience:
Minimum - One (1) year of relevant experience.
Preferred - Three (3) years of relevant experience.

Licenses and Certifications:
Minimum - Unrestricted certification as a
Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) or Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), or the substance use disorder specialty granted with the LCSW, LPC, or LMFT, with the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), or license eligible in the State of Wisconsin.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to exercise critical thinking skills to make complex clinical decisions
  • Working knowledge of disease- and age-specific impact
  • Working knowledge of evidence-based practices and theoretical orientations that guide practice (e.g., crisis intervention, motivational interviewing, systems theory, cognitive-behavioral therapy, etc.)
  • Ability to apply knowledge of relevant research findings in practice

 

Physical Requirements:
Light: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.  Even though the weight lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree.


Work Schedule: 

This position is 100% FTE, 40 hours per week. This position will work Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm and every 5th weekend. This position will not work holidays or take call. Hours may vary based on the needs of the department.
