Medical Physicist

UW Health Northern Illinois seeks a Medical Physicist to join our team at the  UW Health SwedishAmerican Carbone Cancer Center in Rockford, Illinois.

Our Cancer Care team provides unopposed oncology and radiation oncology support to the 260+ employed providers of SwedishAmerican Medical Group.


The position is open to all career levels, providing a great opportunity for either a current resident looking for their first post-residency position or an experienced physicist looking to advance their career. The position is part of a core team of 2 physicists and 3 dosimetrists that are primarily responsible for supporting x-ray physics activities at a comprehensive cancer center.

The Team

The successful candidate will join a team of 2 physicists, 3 dosimetrists, and 2.5 physicians providing care for external beam cancer patients. The physics team collaborates in all areas of patient care and technical duties. The new team member would have immediate opportunities to make significant contributions across a spectrum of physics duties.


The main center has one Varian TrueBeam and one Varian Edge, a Siemens Go-Sim CT Simulator, a GE Omni Legend PET/CT scanner and a Bravos HDR unit. We offer a broad range of treatments to our patients including SRS/SBRT, VMAT, respiratory gating and brachytherapy.

The center utilizes Varian Eclipse treatment planning and Aria record and verify systems on a networked platform. Advanced planning features such as RapidPlan and HyperArc are utilized.  Other software/hardware products utilized within the department include Sun Nuclear, Mim, DoseLab, IBA, IQM and RadFormation.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Acceptance testing, commissioning and maintenance oversight of the linear accelerators and other departmental equipment
  • Implementation of the clinical stereotactic program
  • Oversight of radiation therapy equipment calibration and quality assurance
  • Collaboration with clinical medical staff on simulations and treatment planning recommendations
  • Oversight of quality and safety of clinical treatment delivery
  • Participation in departmental quality assurance and continuous quality improvement programs
  • Participation in clinical research efforts
  • Collaboration in creating improvements and efficiencies in physics-related networking


  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in medical physics or related discipline.
  • Board Certified (or eligible for certification) in therapeutic medical physics from the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent
  • Two or more years of prior work experience as a Medical Physicist in a comprehensive radiation therapy center, or as a Medical Physics Resident from an accredited institution.
