Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the Physical Therapy Description of Residency Practice – Pediatrics. Residents have the opportunity to benefit from a wealth of available clinical resources and will work closely with an excellent staff of medical practitioners, participate in teaching opportunities within the clinical setting and with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Physical Therapy program.

Outstanding library facilities in-house and on the University of Wisconsin campus allow for independent study.

Program structure

The 13-month Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency Program consists of the following:

  • A standard week will find the resident practicing in multiple settings to provide a true representation of the continuum of care in pediatric physical therapy.
  • Average of 20 hours per week of inpatient care hours
  • Average of 16 hours per week of outpatient care hours
  • Participation in LEND (September–May)
  • Average of 4 hours per week in schools (September–December)
  • Observation in the Birth to 3 Program

Supplemental (Unique learning opportunities)

Supporting UW Madison PT School with preparation and delivery of lecture as well as participation as a lab assistant.

Participation in multidisciplinary clinics, including:

  • Cerebral Palsy Clinic
  • Newborn Follow-Up Clinic
  • Down Syndrome Clinic
  • Neuromuscular Disease Clinic
  • Neuromotor Clinic
  • Brain Care Clinic
  • Spina Bifida Clinic

Mentoring

The resident will receive at least 150 combined hours of direct 1:1 clinical mentoring in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Mentors will be chosen by the program.

Didactics

The resident will receive at least 300 hours of educational mentoring with presentation of content both in person and online. In-person didactics will be delivered by faculty who are experts and/or have years of clinical experience in the topic.
